Since someone resurrected this thread, I want to just chime in and say that Z-man needs to have meeples as standard in the US sets.It is absolutely absurd that Agricola in Europe with a customer base that is much more savvy to this sort of a game, gets the pieces that are far more interesting, engaging and newbie friendly.
The abstract cubes are far too vague for new players, especially for new players to euro games. When I first played the game it was a huge turn-off for me. Of course that was over 100 games ago.
I've seen Agricola in Barnes and Noble and other non-gamer type places and I find it shameful that someone may pick up this game because of all the fantastic reviews. But then the complexity of the game plus the uninviting cubes will make the game completely unappetizing.
Agricola fans, we should all implore Zev at Z-man to make animeelples and resourcemepples standard in the base set.
